The Osaka Museum of Housing and Living

Connected directly to Tenjimbashi 6-chome Station, the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living replicates the changing residential landscape of Osaka from the Edo period to the Showa period. It is the first museum in Japan to focus on housing. The Naniwa Machiya no Saijiki on the ninth floor is the centerpiece and allows visitor to experience the townscape of Osaka during the Edo period. The furniture, fixtures, etc are to scale and reproduced to the greatest of detail, conveying the lifestyle of people in that time to those here today. Visitors can explore the town freely and feel the display items with their own hands. The lighting on this floor is also made to change from morning, noon, and night, making for a more realistic experience. Additionally, the decorations change with the seasons and annual events, and the rooms are used for events like rakugo or tea ceremonies as the need arises. Visitors can also enjoy being shown around by volunteer guides called Machiyashu. The observation floor on 10F can be used to get a sweeping view of the townscape on 9F.
