Kawachi cotton refers to hand-woven textiles made from cotton cultivated in Kawachi. Its special feature are the robust threads. The fabric becomes smoother with each wash, which earned it a special recognition and status as a local specialty during the Edo period.

One more feature of the Kawachi cotton are the many patterns that are created during the indigo dyeing process, combining both aesthetics with versatile utility. In fact, Kawachi cotton became so popular that it even made countless appearances during weddings as gifts and utensils.

At this workshop, you can experience the best part of the process: dyeing the fabric with indigo and washing and drying it. The production process, which involves repeated dyeing and drying, is time-consuming, but the delicate techniques inherited by craftsmen and the depth of Kawachi cotton tradition are impressive. Added bonus is, you can take your finished product home with you!
