Kuromon Ichiba is a roughly 580m market located in Osaka's Nippombashi, comprised of almost 170 shops selling fish, vegetables, fruits, drinks, and more. It is about 2 minutes from Nippombashi Station by foot. The name originated from the nearby Enmyoji Temple which had a black gate, the literal meaning of Kuromon in Japanese. Traders started to gather here and sell fish that were caught in Sakai and Kishu. Until it was burned down by the Namba fire of 1912, it was originally called Enmyoji Market. Afterwards, it was destroyed again by air raids during the bombing of Osaka. The present-day iteration was rebuilt after the war. Like Higashinari's Tsuruhashi Shopping Street and Toyonaka's Honan Market, Kuromon Ichiba is known for being a repository of food. With their wares on display, even restaurant chefs often visit to stock up. The market also has shops specializing in things like pufferfish and turtles. It's busy with tourists during the end of the year. In the early half of the 2010's, efforts were made to increase inbound tourism and tourist consumption. In recent years, there are more foreign tourists than Japanese customers, with 70% being foreigners in 2016. Some stalls in the market also sell food like seafood skewers, fresh fruit juice, matcha ice cream, and more. It's a good place to get a taste of what different vendors have to offer.
