This is the area of Osaka City known as Kita. With a similar atmosphere to Tokyo, modern department stores and hotels line its streets. Countless shopping malls, most of which are connected by an extensive underground area. The underground area not only provides access to each shopping center, but also 7 stations: JR Osaka Station, Kitashinchi Station, Hankyu Electric Railway Umeda Station, Hanshin Railway Umeda Station, Osaka Metro Umeda Station, Higashi-Umeda Station, and Nishi-Umeda Station.
The Umeda of today, now filled with shopping malls and skyscrapers, was once an area of paddy fields. Osaka was developed through the efforts of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. During his time, the Kita area was nothing but swampland that repeatedly flooded due to being at sea level. Because the land was reclaimed and used as fields, the characters, were taken from those two wods respectively, “埋田.” In the Edo period, the name was changed to it's current-day iteration, “梅田.”
To the east side of Umeda Station is HEP FIVE, a shopping mall with a huge Ferris wheel on top. To the west is Umeda Sky Building and its Kuchu Teien Observatory.
Nearby, in Tenjibashisuji Rokuchome, is the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living. Inside is a reconstruction of an old Osaka village, which you can walk around in a yukata. (Yukata Rental: ¥500)
In Temma, there is the Japanese Mint, which is famous for its cherry blossom trees. Every year, during cherry blossom season, you'll find lots of tourists here.
Umeda serves as a major terminal in an advanced railway network that provides convenient access to areas in Kyoto, Hyogo, and within Osaka. There are 7 stations: JR Osaka Station, Kitashinchi Station, Hankyu Electric Railway Umeda Station, Hanshin Railway Umeda Station, Osaka Metro Umeda Station, Higashi-Umeda Station, and Nishi-Umeda Station.
