Osaka Castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and is one of the most famous castles in Japan. Burnt down twice by fire, the existing castle was rebuilt in 1931 from contributions by Osaka residents. It is a registered tangible cultural property of Japan. Access to the castle keep is just shy of 20 minutes walking from either JR Osakajokoen Station via Gokuraku-bashi Bridge or from Morinomiya Station by way of Sakuramon Gate. It's also popular to take the subway Tanimachi Line to Tanimachi 4-chome Station, and admire the scenic spot of Rokuban Yagura from across the moat, before heading to the castle through Otemon Gate. 8 floors inside and 5 stories outside, the 58m main tower gives a sweeping view of Osaka City proper. The expansive Osaka Castle Park has many sightseeing spots like Hokoku Shrine and Nishinomaru Garden that keep tourists coming all year round from within and without Japan. The park is also known for its cherry blossoms, with the perimeter of the moat and Nishinomaru Garden being the best spots in Osaka. After visiting the main tower, there's still lots more fun to had, including having lunch at Jo-Terrace Osaka, or taking a ride on the golden Gozabune boat. We also recommend the Aqua Liner which departs from a nearby pier, and takes you through the water capital of Osaka.
