Sakuranomiya Bridge

Sakuranomiya Bridge was initially opened in 1930 in accordance with Osaka City's first urban planning project. In 2006, a second bridge, Shin-Sakuranomiya Bridge was installed and the two together formed a steel arch bridge known as Ginbashi. To alleviate traffic congestion, a third bridge was added in order to widen the road. The original Sakuranomiya Bridge was reduced to 3 westbound lanes making more room for its pedestrian pathway. Shin-Sakuranomiya Bridge has 3 lanes running east and is 22m wide,108m long. With regards to the construction of Sakuranomiya Bridge, Kyoto University professor, Goichi Takeda provided the design which costed an extraordinary 1,280,000 yen at the time and took 3 years to complete building. Shin-Sakuranomiya Bridge is known for being designed by Tadao Ando. As bolts could not be used in the construction, all of the cross-sections were welded together. The latest techniques were used on site for a large-scale welding project, the first of its kind in the world. The areas around the welded parts had windbreaks attached and were worked on with the greatest attention to detail. Now, Japan National Route 1 runs through the bridge.

  • Infomation

The area that Sakuranomiya Bridge connects in called Sakuranomiya, and it is the most famous place for cherry blossoms in Osaka. The cherry blossoms that fill the trees along the river and the Japan Mint are well-known. The origin of the name come from Sakuranomiya Shrine just 5 minutes away from JR Sakuranomiya Station by foot. The cherry blossoms on these grounds bloomed so fully that the area took on that name. Heavy floods in 1885 wiped out most of the trees, but you can still see a few there even to this day.
