Temma Tenjin Hanjo Tei

Situated by the northern torii gate of Osaka Temmangu, Temma Tenjin Hanjo Tei holds daily performances focused primarily on rakugo, but also ranging from manzai comedy to magic to folk music and more. Its beginnings started in 2003, when the inaugurated Kamigata Rakugo Association chairman, Katsura Sanshi, made a request to Tenjimbashisuji Shopping Street for a vacant store in an attempt to revive theatre as a means of revitalitzing the area in addition to passing down and further developing the culture of traditional performing arts. Thanks to the kindness of Osaka Temmangu's chief priest, a space on the site of the shrine was offered at no charge and that was how a venue specializing in rakugo came to be there. Through fundraising, the theater was opened in 2006. The name Hanjo Tei originally came from the rakugo program held by the organization in Senri-chuo's Selcy Hall, Senri Hanjo Tei. In the mornings, Temma Hanjo Tei has performances by groups that rent out the space. During the day, performers from veterans to novices take turns on stage. They change on a weekly basis. At night, you can enjoy programs organized by various rakugo associations. They also hold a lecture/experience intended for schools.

  • Infomation

Legend has it that the red rickshaw in front of Temma Tenjin Hanjo Tei, was used as a means of transport for Katsura Harudanji I, who was followed by a mountain of debt, but in actuality it was used by Katsura Bunza III. TV personality, Michiko Suzuki, is said to have commissioned a craftsman in Shizuoka to make it and donated it to be a special attraction for the theater. In 2006, to commemorate the opening of the theater, Katsura Harudanji III rode the rickshaw on a parade through Tenjimbashisuji Shopping Street. Grab a picture with the rickshaw before you go.
